2-2 vs Wargrave Lions

Wargrave are second in the league – two places above us and a very strong team. They came out determined to win and attacked from the start. The pressure was soaked up my a solid Maidenhead defence from Charlotte, Sophie, Lucy and Alex (with great backup from Amelie as normal).

We managed to get forward a bit and almost took the lead with a few attempts on goal including a great shot from Lucy with the rebound just headed over the bar by Maddie. Pressure from a determined and well drilled Wargrave eventually led to two goals though – nothing the Maidenhead goalie could do to save those.

The second half started with more control from Maidenhead. A great team attack linking half the team led to the first goal for Maidenhead. Then Lizzy took a corner and with maybe the slightest of delflections from Sophie it sneaked into the Wagrave net. Soon after, a free kick from just out side our area was brilliantly taken by Wargrave, but equally well saved by Maidenhead goalie. From then on it was a tense game with both teams almost scoring and the cross bar hit at both ends. A final save from the Maidenhead goalie and the game ended a draw.

The Maidenhead team played brilliantly against a very strong team. It took great team work and committment from all the girls to come back from 2-0 down.

Perfect start to 2020 for U14 Girls

Fresh off the back of last weeks Berks Futsal tournament triumph the Maidenhead under 14 girls continued their winning streak with a convincing score over a strong Tilehurst team.

It was back to business for the u14 girls with their first 11 aside league match of 2020 and they didn’t hang about stating their intentions from the start, with the first of four goals being slotted away within the three minutes of kick off thanks to ‘goal machine’ Becky Tinnelly.

The girls maintained 85% possession throughout the first half with Charlie Potter perfectly poaching a second goal from Sofia Lacey’s corner just before half-time.

The second half saw Maidenheads wall of defence thwarting any chance of Tilehurst breaking through, resulting in only two attempts at goal – both kept out of the back of the net by keeper Lily May. The attack continued with striker Hattie Parkinson running in a third goal followed by a definitive fourth from Becky Tinnelly.

With only seven league matches to go the pressure is now on. Can girls retain their lead and reign supreme to win the league title for the first time in their history? Only time will tell.  It’s all to play for!!!

We lost 5-1 in our away game against this team when we went down to 10 players to match their 10 despite us having 12 players on the day.  

This time we had 17 players available as only Charlie Hayward not playing and they allowed us to use all 6 subs.

Report from Manager Roland McGill: Another game where we could’ve and should’ve come away with something but didn’t. Big improvement on last week and we were in it until the last 3 mins when we lost 2 soft goals to lose 4-7. Highlights from the game include Ionut Mihai’s first goal for the club getting us back into the game at 2-1, a fine solo goal by Harry McGill just before half-time, 2 second half goals from Harry James and a fine debut by Oli Fern. Great to see the boys fight right until the end. Some great performances and with a bit more luck and discipline we could’ve got a result.

Maidenhead U14 Girls are for the first time Berkshire County League Futsal Champions!

Maidenhead U14 Girls entered 2 teams into the annual Futsal competition held for all teams in the Berkshire County Football League on Saturday 11 Jan 2020.

The U14 Blues team were undefeated scoring 23 goals as they banished the demons of the last 2 years (where they lost very close finals both times) winning the final 3-2 against Caversham.

The Whites team played some remarkable football with exceptional skills demonstrated, in particular by Violet Kingston-Wheeler, Georgina Evans and Hattie Parkinson and were very unlucky not to get better results in their pool.

The Blues team of Rebecca Hesketh, Sofia Lacey, Emily McCartney, Emily McMaster, Daniela Yakubovich and “Goal machine” Becky Tinnelly took a while to get going with the Futsal format with a couple of 1-1 draws to start. They were deserved winners overall as they swept away teams from Reading, Wargrave and Caversham 2-0, 5-0, 4-0 in the pool and then won the QF 3-0 and SF 2-0 with plenty to spare.

U12 Panthers 9aside EBFA Div 6 – Lost 2-6 at home to Spencers Wood Typhoons – Report from Manager Roland McGill:  Well that was a game of two halves.  We were well in control in the first half with Harry James scoring on 24mins – a well deserved lead.  We sadly fell asleep just before half time and although Adem Aitkaci saved the first shot, he couldn’t get near the second.  1-1 at half time.  Things got worse and we were 3-1 down 6mins into the 2nd half.  Harry James pulled one back with a great run and shot following a superb pass from Callum Neeson-Roberts.  Bit more slack defending meant we lost 6-2.  We did have a few more chances  but our collective defending was poor in the second half.  A couple of players were nursing injuries and this didn’t help with no subs.  Callum Neeson-Roberts got the nod for Man of the Match, really solid at the back in the first half and creative up front in the second – well done.

For this first game back after the Christmas break, so 3 weeks after our last match on 14Dec, we had only 12 players available from our large squad.  The boys hadn’t had any training sessions since Mon 09Dec.

Zac Murray was sub but he wasn’t feeling fit enough to play so didn’t end up making an appearance.  Zac’s cousin Kaine Murray ran the team.  Kaine appointed Spencer as Captain.

Everybody was elated with the performance from our 11 players who played well for the whole game with no substitutions for fresh legs.  We lost 7-1 to this team previously this season so it was a massive turnaround to beat them 4-0 this time.  This was also the team’s first clean sheet of the season. This win also took them up to 7 points and off the bottom spot for the first time this season in bottom division.
