U16 Colts EBFA Div 6 of 6 – Won 2-1 away to Camberley Town Youth Rangers

We won 6-0 in our home fixture against Camberley but were in for a much tighter game away.

We had 15 of our 16 man squad present with only Lucas Taylor unavailable. Team was therefore Freddie Nash in goal, Jack Clews left back, Spencer Rigg-Hersom and Noah Sturrock central defence with Thomas Watson right back. Ben Thompson left wing, Declan Pinto right wing with Owen Smyth, Jake Stanley and Hisham Nadeem central midfield and Rhyce O’Connor up front. Starting subs Charlie Townsend, Josh Ewers, Kai Enser and Tejas Chahal.

Kick off 10.36am. Thomas nice touch. Owen to Thomas. Jake played back to Owen who played the ball forward. Declan to Thomas to Owen. Jake superb ball up to Declan who took it down well. It was good to get the win, especially from a losing position, to maintain our 5th place in the table but we really should have done it more convincingly. However, it was only our 2nd match since 18Dec so boys not as match fit as they had been prior to Christmas.

We had 4 of the squad unavailable so only 1 sub on the day and a couple of defenders out. Team was therefore Freddie Nash in goal, Kai Enser left back, Jake Stanley and Noah Sturrock in central defence and Thomas Watson right back. Ben Thompson left wing, Declan Pinto right wing and in central midfield Charlie Townsend, Tejas Chahal and Owen Smyth with Rhyce O’Connor up front. Josh Ewers started as sub.

The 0-0 in the 2nd half was more indicative of the similar levels of both teams and really we were the victims of having to play quite a few players out of position today. We had had to put good midfielders in defence and then a striker in goal.

Man of the Match was Kai Enser. Special mention to Josh Ewers though who was a reluctant goalie in 2nd half but kept a clean sheet pulling off several saves with his feet!

The result put Arborfield within 1 point of us in the table with a game in hand. Both teams have 6 wins and 5 defeats but we also have had a draw. Incidentally the top 2 teams are currently tied on 33 points and 3rd and 4th teams are tied on 30 points.

I’ve been at many games where the tide has turned but not sure I’ve ever been at a game where we have been 3-0 up and then lost 3-5. All the boys played some good stuff but we just didn’t seem to be able to string enough passes together and kept giving possession away too cheaply.

This was a game we should have won but Ashridge probably had their best game of the season with the goalie in outstanding form. Before this game Ashridge didn’t have a point to their name and had conceded 34 goals in 5 games and scored 5. They were totally gutted to lose 2 points in the last minute of the game. This was not a good performance from us, though we did improve in the second half. We need to up our game for next Saturday as we then play the top team Hearts of Teddlothian Cheetahs who have a 100% record 7 wins from 7 and have scored 58 goals and conceded just 10.

This league game was rescheduled as both teams had byes in the first round of the league cup but the home pitches were full with home cup ties so we played it as an away game instead at Berks County Sports Ground. Wayne Welch ran the team on the day.

Hisham Nadeem was out injured with an ankle sprain. Jack Clews was sub when he eventually arrived nearly 30mins after kick off!

Today’s performance was a pleasure to watch with all the boys playing well. Along with their improved match fitness now that we were playing our 3rd league match of the season, the passing play had improved significantly. Also some of the skills and touches were a delight to see. In my opinion the talented Owen Smyth had his best game for us so far as on top of his undoubted skill he improved his end product with much better interplay with his team-mates. All the team played well. So much so that the subs were sometimes reluctant to come on when the team on the pitch was playing so well! However, my Man of the Match went to Thomas Watson making his debut for the team and proving himself a valuable addition to the squad.

Following our 2 consecutive wins, the Colts moved into joint 4th out of 11 teams after 3 games in Division 6.

We had all 14 of our current squad available to play our first away game of the season.

Man of the Match was sealed for Josh Ewers as soon as he scored his second. What a revelation he was as a striker and he had never played in that position for us before. He’s probably made the position his own now though!
